AIXTRON Joins GraFunkL Project for Graphene-Enhanced UVC LEDs
AIXTRON SE has joined the GraFunkL research project to develop UVC LEDs utilizing graphene, aimed at combating hospital pathogens. This collaboration, supported by a €2.1 million grant from Germany's Federal Ministry of Education and Research, includes partners like Protemics GmbH and ams-OSRAM International GmbH. The integration of graphene promises improved energy efficiency and light output in these LEDs, which are mercury-free and more suitable for mobile use compared to conventional lamps.
The project aims to enhance the application of graphene on large-scale wafers, facilitating a move towards industrial production. This innovation sees potential applications in the medical field and beyond, offering advancements in decontamination processes. By increasing the efficiency and applicability of UVC LEDs, the project supports broader distribution and use, ultimately aiming for improved technologies for pathogen control in medical and other sectors.
