Financial Distress in Swiss Companies Hits Four-Year Peak

The financial distress rate among Swiss companies has reached a four-year high, climbing to 6.8%, as opposed to the 9.2% average seen across Europe. This marks the fourth consecutive annual increase since 2022. Despite this rise, Switzerland's distress levels remain significantly below the broader European figures.

Key sectors in distress include automotive, specialised retail, and energy & utilities. Automotive companies were the most affected, with 20% classified as distressed. The overall financial structure of Swiss firms shows slight improvement, with decreases in businesses lacking operational performance and balance-sheet strength.

Switzerland’s strong franc and sluggish growth put additional pressure on its export-driven economy. The KOF Swiss Economic Institute has adjusted its 2026 GDP growth forecast to 0.8%, partly due to geopolitical tensions and currency challenges. The need for businesses to bolster liquidity and operational resilience is paramount.
