Hautalampi Mine Explores Carbon Capture as a Regional Pilot Project

Stockholm, January 28, 2025 – Eurobattery Minerals AB's Hautalampi battery mineral mine is considered for a regional pilot project focused on carbon capture and storage (CCS). Located at Outokumpu Industrial Park, the project will collaborate with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland to explore CCS options, particularly in the mine's hardened backfill.

The initiative, under the “Project for Rapid Structural Change” and backed by North Karelia Regional Council, aims to sequester carbon in the mine's annual 200,000 m³ backfill. This aligns with regional carbon neutrality goals and could impact future industry practices.

The CCS project reduces cement needs by using carbon dioxide, potentially enhancing cement properties. If successful, the Hautalampi mine could function as a carbon sink while extracting valuable minerals, contributing to sustainable mining practices.
