Closing Digital Literacy Gap: A Trillion-Dollar Opportunity in Global GDP Growth

A recent report by GSMA Intelligence, in collaboration with Huawei, highlights a significant digital divide affecting 3.1 billion people due to gaps in digital literacy and AI skills. Released during UNESCO's Digital Learning Week, it emphasizes the potential $3.5 trillion boost to global GDP by 2030 if these gaps are bridged, notably benefiting low- and middle-income countries.

Artificial intelligence is seen as both a facilitator and a challenge, helping low-literacy users but increasing privacy and security demands. The report calls for comprehensive digital training to tackle these issues, warning of entrenched inequalities without intervention.

Huawei's "Skills on Wheels" initiative, featuring solar-powered DigiTruck mobile classrooms, offers a practical solution by providing AI literacy and connectivity to remote areas. Such efforts have successfully reached over 130,000 people in 21 countries, promoting widespread skill sharing.

The study urges policymakers to prioritize AI literacy as core infrastructure to overcome the digital divide. Collaborative efforts between technology vendors, telecom operators, and NGOs are recommended to expand digital inclusion.
