Global Peace Index 2026: AI Warfare and Record Conflicts Impact Peace

The Institute for Economics & Peace has revealed the 2026 Global Peace Index, painting a grim picture of global stability. The number of conflicts is at an all-time high, partly due to a geopolitical shift tagged as the "Great Fragmentation." This shift sees the weakening influence of traditional European powers, with middle powers filling the gap. The technological advancements in warfare, including AI, are outpacing international diplomatic frameworks, complicating conflict resolution.

Key findings include a rise in violence's economic impact, now $21.81 trillion or 10.5% of the global GDP. Over 181,000 deaths were recorded in global conflicts in 2025, a substantial rise from 29,000 in 2007. Drone attacks have surged drastically, with AI shrinking combat decision times from days to mere seconds.

Iceland remains the most peaceful nation. Yet, Russia has become the least peaceful, alongside five other countries severely impacted by instability. Peaceful nations are notably clustered in Europe, which sees increased military spending despite being the most peaceful region.
