LightOn Unveils BioClinical ModernBERT for Enhanced Medical NLP

On June 13, 2025, LightOn announced BioClinical ModernBERT, a new state-of-the-art encoder model designed for medical Natural Language Processing (NLP). Developed in partnership with institutions including Harvard and McGill University, the model builds upon ModernBERT's foundation to enhance domain-specific applications.

BioClinical ModernBERT addresses the challenges posed by lengthy medical texts, using hybrid attention and unpadding mechanisms to process long-context documents. The model excels in medical classification and Named Entity Recognition (NER) tasks, setting a new benchmark for NLP in healthcare.
