Vietnam's Strategic Measures to Combat IUU Fishing
Eight years after receiving a "yellow card" warning from the European Commission due to illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing, Vietnam has launched an extensive campaign to address the issue. This national effort transcends economic interests, as it is linked to national prestige, community livelihoods, and the sustainable future of fisheries.
The country has passed extensive legislative reforms, including the requirement for seafood traceability and the implementation of stringent penalties for violations. Recent updates to the Fisheries Law reinforce these efforts, empowering the government to enforce fishing regulations more effectively.
Investments in technology have been crucial, with systems like eCDT and Vessel Monitoring Systems enhancing vessel management. Traceability mechanisms are operational for both domestic and imported products, aligning with international standards.
Vietnam's rigorous measures and reforms illustrate its commitment to eliminating IUU fishing and enhancing its global seafood competitiveness, with the potential removal of the yellow card anticipated to further validate these efforts.
