NanoViricides Awaits Approval for Ebola Treatment Trial

NanoViricides, Inc., based in Shelton, CT, is on the brink of securing regulatory approval for a Phase II clinical trial of its NV-387 Oral Gummies as an Ebola treatment in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The local regulatory agency, ACOREP, is reviewing the application. Financing for the trial has been secured, enabling the company to move forward once approval is granted.

The urgency for a new oral treatment option comes amid a rapidly growing Ebola outbreak in the region, driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain. Current treatments largely rely on infusions, which are challenging to administer on a large scale. NanoViricides highlights that NV-387 is the only oral option under active consideration, potentially offering a scalable solution in resource-limited settings.

The Ebola outbreak has resulted in over 1,300 deaths with nearly 3,000 cases reported. The World Health Organization has declared it as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak to date, sparking an urgent need for effective treatments.

While antibody-based treatments are available, their efficacy against different Ebola strains remains limited. In contrast, NV-387's broad-spectrum antiviral action targets host-side viral features, providing an advantage in treating multiple virus strains.

As the outbreak continues, the success of NV-387 could mark a significant advancement in addressing not only Ebola but also future viral pandemics. Should the trial prove successful, it could set a precedent for pandemic preparedness strategies.
