Aurubis Hamburg Launches Powerful Copper Exhaust System

Aurubis AG has unveiled the expansion of its Reducing Diffuse Emissions system at the Hamburg site, marking a significant stride in environmentally friendly copper production. This new exhaust system, deemed the world's most powerful, reduces diffuse emissions by 80%, up from 40% since its initial implementation in 2021. An investment of about €30 million integrates novel technologies for optimized energy use, setting a benchmark for sustainable multimetal production.

With a €115 million total investment—€85 million for the initial phase—the system captures over 1.6 million cubic meters of air per hour, filtering particles smaller than 10 µm. The cleaned air is released through three 110-meter-high stacks. This closed-cycle approach ensures valuable metal recovery and minimal waste.

Aurubis is spending approx. €490 million on various projects at this site, reinforcing its position as a major multimetal producer. This initiative reflects the company's commitment to sustainability, as a third of the site's energy use now targets air pollution control.
