UK Travellers Shy Away from Hard-to-Pronounce Destinations

Recent research by Omio, a global booking platform, indicates that 30% of British tourists steer clear of destinations with names they cannot pronounce. This barrier affects 22% of UK adults, discouraging them from exploring unfamiliar places. Beyond pronunciation, difficulties in correctly typing or searching for places contribute to this trend. Destinations like Ljubljana, Reykjavik, and Montjuïc are overlooked due to embarrassment over mispronunciation.

Social anxiety plays a role, with 30% of travellers fearing they might seem rude and 26% fearing embarrassment. Many stick to familiar names, missing out on unique destinations. Although 85% wish to improve their pronunciation skills, few seek traditional advice. Instead, 42% utilize AI tools, while others turn to social media.

Omio, in collaboration with language expert Alex Rawlings, has developed a pronunciation guide to aid travellers. Their goal is to make travel accessible and less intimidating, encouraging explorers to venture beyond familiar places.
