Africa's Role in Global Energy Transitions
The global energy landscape is undergoing a transformation driven by environmental demands, technological advances, and changing consumer patterns. In 2025, investment in clean energy technologies is projected to reach $2.2 trillion, double that of fossil fuels. While fossil fuels still supply 80% of energy, Africa faces unique challenges and opportunities. Despite being home to 20% of the world's population, Africa receives only 3% of global energy investment, leaving over 600 million people without electricity.
Africa's abundant renewable resources, like solar and wind, offer significant potential. However, 52% of investments in Africa are still directed toward hydrocarbons. A balanced approach, using natural gas as a transition fuel, alongside investment in renewables, aligns with the "just transition" principle.
Africa needs support through financing and regulatory reforms to overcome funding challenges. Successfully navigating this transition can enhance Africa's role in the global energy market, shaping not only the continent's but also the world's energy future.
