Roma Administration Launched in The Hague to Address Identity Documentation Gaps
The Roma Intelligence & Administration Agency (RIAA) introduced the Roma Identity & Archive Infrastructure in The Hague on July 7, 2026. This system is designed to help Roma individuals who lack vital source documents affirm their identity, origin, or family history. Collaborating with Royal Joh. Enschedé, the initiative creates a comprehensive Roma population register. This facilitates the issuance of official documents post-registration and verification.
The absence of reliable registration for Roma populations has posed challenges for individuals and authorities for decades. In response, the RIAA's innovative system supports migration and identification services, offering a method to recognize Roma individuals. The first implementation is in the Netherlands, with plans to expand globally, assisting authorities responsible for verifying identity and nationality.
Milutin Pavlovic, from the Dutch verification program, highlighted the impact on personal identity, while cultural anthropologist Peter Jorna emphasized the importance of understanding Roma culture. The project's broader aim is to contribute to identity documentation and heritage preservation, with potential support from international partners like the UN and the EU.
