Sandoz Celebrates 80 Years of Antibiotics, Calls for European Policy Action

Basel-based Sandoz Group AG, a global leader in affordable medicines, marks 80 years of large-scale antibiotic production in Europe. Celebrating in Kundl, Austria, Sandoz emphasizes the urgent need for political action to preserve European medicine security. Critical antibiotics, essential to modern medicine, face production risks due to unsustainable market conditions.

Sandoz warns that Europe's production capacity is at risk, requiring urgent action from policymakers. Chairman Gilbert Ghostine and CEO Richard Saynor highlight the strategic necessity of maintaining antibiotic manufacturing in Europe. A significant vulnerability arises as 90% of antibiotic active ingredients are produced outside Europe, mainly in China.

The company filed a draft anti-dumping complaint with the European Commission regarding Amoxicillin API imports from China, citing market-distorting practices. This move aims to protect European manufacturing capacity critical to public health and economic security.
