2025 Natural Catastrophe Losses Surpass USD 100 Billion, Reports Swiss Re Institute

In 2025, insured losses from natural catastrophes have again exceeded USD 100 billion, marking the sixth consecutive year at this level. The total insured losses are estimated at USD 107 billion, driven by significant events in the US, notably wildfires and severe convective storms (SCS). The LA wildfires alone account for USD 40 billion, becoming the costliest wildfire event globally.

US events contributed to 83% of global losses, amounting to USD 89 billion. Severe convective storms in the US, especially in the first half of the year, were significant loss drivers, causing USD 50 billion in insured losses worldwide. Meanwhile, despite an active hurricane season, losses remained relatively low at USD 2.5 billion.

In Southeast Asia, severe flooding in November impacted countries like Vietnam and Indonesia. These events highlight the ongoing need for enhanced prevention and preparedness to mitigate future losses, according to Swiss Re Institute's experts.
