UEG Urges EU to Focus on Digestive Health in Upcoming Financial Plans
United European Gastroenterology (UEG), representing over 50,000 professionals, has called for the EU to prioritize digestive health in the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2028–2034. The organization seeks dedicated funding through FP10, the forthcoming EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
Digestive diseases impact 332 million Europeans, yet, according to UEG, they are insufficiently funded despite leading to significant economic and health burdens. Digestive diseases, including various cancers, cost the EU approximately €25 billion in direct care and €89 billion in indirect productivity losses annually.
UEG President Joost PH Drenth emphasizes the societal and economic urgency of recognizing digestive health as a priority. The group advocates for focused investment to boost prevention, research, and healthcare resilience. They suggest that deliberate funding within FP10 and the post-2027 EU4Health program is essential for enhancing outcomes and competitiveness.
