Lionheart Geothermal Power Plant Construction Begins
Vulcan Energy Resources Limited (ASX: VUL, FSE: VUL) has commenced civil construction at the Lionheart 30MW geothermal power plant in Landau, Germany. This phase follows initial earthworks and precedes the construction of buildings and assembly of process equipment. The current activities involve foundation preparation and concrete work, along with road infrastructure development.
The Lionheart project, located in the Upper Rhine Valley Brine Field, marks Vulcan's first phase in Europe. It aims to integrate lithium and renewable energy production, with a target capacity of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate annually. The facility will also co-produce 275 GWh of renewable power and 560 GWh of heat, serving local consumers over its 30-year lifespan.
Designed to deliver both geothermal energy and lithium extraction, the site covers ten hectares in Landau's industrial park. It will connect to an integrated pipeline network for brine and water transport. Managing Director Cris Moreno emphasized the project's progress, noting its potential for cost-effective lithium production insulated from fluctuating energy prices.
