Vulcan Energy Advances Lionheart Lithium Chemicals Facility
Vulcan Energy has commenced construction at its central lithium chemical plant in the Infraserv Industrial Park Höchst, Frankfurt. This development is part of Vulcan's Lionheart Project, which aims to enhance domestic lithium production in Germany. The groundbreaking event was attended by key figures including Hesse’s Minister-President Boris Rhein. The plant will convert lithium chloride to lithium hydroxide monohydrate, targeting an annual production capacity of 24,000 tonnes, sufficient for 500,000 electric vehicle batteries.
Vulcan's project will also generate 275 GWh of renewable power and 560 GWh of heat annually for local use over its 30-year project lifespan. The initiative leverages Vulcan's proprietary technology for extracting lithium from geothermal brines, creating a renewable energy byproduct. This project forms part of Vulcan's broader strategy to ensure energy and raw material resilience in Europe, supported by a funding package of €2.2 billion secured in December 2025.
