Cape May County and Waga Energy to Transform Landfill Gas into Renewable Energy
The Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority (CMCMUA) is partnering with Waga Energy to upgrade landfill gas into renewable natural gas (RNG) in southern New Jersey. This collaboration will lead to the construction of an RNG production unit at CMCMUA's Secure Sanitary Landfill. Utilizing Waga Energy’s WAGABOX® technology, the facility will convert landfill gas into pipeline-quality RNG over a 20-year term.
The project aims to process up to 1,000 standard cubic feet per minute of landfill gas, producing approximately 205,000 MMBtu of RNG annually. It is expected to cut up to 15,800 metric tons of CO₂ emissions yearly by replacing fossil fuels, contributing to the circular economy and providing a local and renewable energy source. The CMCMUA landfill currently serves 16 municipalities, processing around 180,000 tons of waste annually.
This project represents a significant step towards efficient and sustainable landfill management. Revenues generated will further support the CMCMUA's investment in landfill gas collection systems. Waga Energy's innovative technology combines membrane filtration and cryogenic distillation, ensuring the production of high-quality RNG regardless of gas variations.
