Casella and Waga Energy open a biomethane unit in Elmira

On May 14, 2026, Casella Waste Systems and Waga Energy inaugurated a biomethane production facility in Elmira, New York. Operational since January, this unit optimizes waste recovery by producing up to 179 GWh/year of biomethane. This technology, called WAGABOX®, purifies biogas, transforming it into a sustainable energy source. Injected directly into the local grid, this biomethane could reduce CO₂ equivalent emissions by 47,000 tons per year, according to the EPA.

Ned Coletta, CEO of Casella, emphasizes the effectiveness of the partnership with Waga Energy, which financed and managed the operation for 20 years. Profits from the sale of biomethane are shared. For Guénaël Prince of Waga Energy, this collaboration represents a significant step towards the energy transition, redefining waste as a valuable resource.
