DB and Blue Elephant Energy sign two major power purchase agreements • New large-scale solar parks to start operation by 2027 • Annual electricity volume enables around 14 million ICE train kilometers
Berlin and Hamburg, 08.12.2025 – Deutsche Bahn (DB) continues to increase the share of green electricity in its energy mix. To this end, its subsidiary DB Energie has signed two long-term electricity supply contracts, known as power purchase agreements (PPAs), with Blue Elephant Energy GmbH (BEE) for a total of around 2.5 terawatt hours (TWh) of solar power. The electricity will be supplied by two large solar parks in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, both scheduled to go into operation by mid-2027. With DB purchasing a substantial share of the electricity generated by the two plants, the company will be able to cover the energy demand for approximately 14 million ICE train kilometers each year. With contract terms of up to 13 years, DB is enabling the realization of both major projects while making an important contribution to a climate-friendly energy supply for rail transport.
Together, the two new solar parks will generate more than 300 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity annually. With an installed capacity of 266 MWp, the Schafhöfen solar park in Bavaria will become the second-largest solar park in Germany once completed. By 2027, roughly 370,000 solar modules will be installed across an area larger than 300 soccer fields. A dedicated on-site substation and the battery storage facility planned in parallel will ensure an efficient grid connection. With 53 MWp, the Aulendorf solar park will be among the largest in Baden-Württemberg.
Florian Reuter, Managing Director of DB Energie GmbH: “We are making rail travel in Germany increasingly climate friendly. With around 15,000 train journeys a day on the electrified rail network, Deutsche Bahn is one of Germany’s largest consumers of green electricity and a key driver of the energy transition. Our goal is clear: we want to be climate-neutral by 2040. Long-term green power contracts like these enable the construction of large solar parks and strengthen the expansion of renewable energies in Germany. Moreover, by combining solar power — currently the lowest-cost source of power generation — with battery storage, we will be able to use it far more flexibly in the future. This brings us step by step closer to a climate-neutral railway while ensuring security of supply and economic efficiency.”
Felix Goedhart, founder and CEO of Blue Elephant Energy GmbH: “We are very pleased that DB Energie has placed its trust in our projects. These agreements mark an important milestone in our further growth in Germany and make a significant contribution to decarbonizing the energy supply reliably and for the long term. At the same time, we are strengthening our role as project developer and consolidating our profile as an integrated partner for green electricity – whether from photovoltaics, wind, or battery storage systems. The short development period of only three years through to construction shows that Germany can deliver. ‘Germany-speed’ is possible when all stakeholders work together. Our special thanks therefore also go to the two municipalities. By integrating battery storage into the solar parks, the projects will be able to provide additional value in the future, increasing both security of supply and flexibility in the electricity system.”
Deutsche Bahn currently covers around 70 percent of its traction power with renewable energy, significantly above the public green electricity mix of around 59 percent. Since the beginning of 2025, all stations, maintenance depots, office buildings, and facilities in Germany supplied by DB Energie have been powered entirely with green electricity. Passengers on DB long-distance trains have been traveling within Germany on 100 percent green power since 2018. DB’s green electricity portfolio continues to grow: offshore wind farms (Nordsee-Ost, He Dreiht, Trianel Borkum, Amrumbank-West), onshore wind farms, and photovoltaic parks across Germany supply power to DB. Since last year, the portfolio has also been expanded by battery storage systems - the first two will go into operation next year in Walsum and Beckum.
About DB Energie GmbH:
DB Energie plays a key role in Deutsche Bahn’s energy transition by developing and providing essential energy infrastructure. The DB subsidiary offers railway undertakings in Germany a reliable and sustainable energy supply. As a network operator, DB Energie manages the more than 7,900 kilometer 16.7-hertz traction power network, closed 50-hertz distribution grids, and the DC supply systems for the Berlin and Hamburg S-Bahn networks. By 2038, all DB traction power – around seven terawatt hours per year – will be 100 percent green.
About Blue Elephant Energy GmbH:
Blue Elephant Energy GmbH develops, acquires, and operates solar and onshore wind parks as well as battery storage systems, with a focus on the European market. Since its founding in 2016, BEE has established itself as a leading independent power producer (IPP) with an installed capacity of 1.73 GW and a further project pipeline of 9.5 GW. With a broad, technology-diverse project pipeline and deep expertise along the entire value chain, BEE continues to drive its dynamic growth strategy forward.
