Emerald Horizon AG moves Headquarters to the Black Panther
Research and development continue to grow at the LaboraTHorium on Karl-Huber-Gasse; numerous positions open.
Graz, 21 October 2026 – Listed company Emerald Horizon AG has moved its corporate headquarters to the striking “Black Panther” office building at Liebenauer Tangente 6 in Graz. Research and development stay with the laboratory at the previous site on Karl-Huber-Gasse 15, where the move frees up the space the fast-growing engineering team needs.
“With the Black Panther, our headquarters now has an address that matches our ambitions. At the LaboraTHorium, our engineers gain the room they need for the next stages of development,” says Florian Wagner, CEO of Emerald Horizon AG.
A Landmark at the Gateway to the City
The “Black Panther” is one of the city’s best-known contemporary buildings. It was designed as a landmark at the main entrance to Graz.
Its shape is modelled on a panther poised to leap. Norbert Hofer, Vice President Strategic Communications, comments: “For a company working on the energy supply of tomorrow, a building that’s ready to leap is the right address.”
“A listed company in this phase of growth needs structures that grow with it. With the new headquarters, we are bringing our administrative functions and management together in one place, while development gets the full space it needs at the LaboraTHorium for the next steps,” says MMag. Philipp Pölzl, Vice President Operations of Emerald Horizon AG.
LaboraTHorium remains the Heart of Development
At the Emerald LaboraTHorium in Karl-Huber-Gasse, the development team works on the company’s core products.
In recent months, Emerald Horizon has brought numerous additional engineers and technicians on board, along with experts in nuclear physics, accelerator technology and chemistry. Every new team member increases the demand for workshops, test benches and laboratory space. Moving the headquarters frees up this space. It also creates significantly more room for reactor construction and our Chief Reactor Engineers.
“The newly available square metres at the LaboraTHorium create enabling space to develop innovative components and prototypes, in step with our continuously growing team!” says Mario J. Müller, Vice President R&D of Emerald Horizon AG. This makes Emerald Horizon AG an employer of growing importance for the greater Graz area.
Entire Teams being built
Hiring continues, and not only in research and development. Open positions include electrical engineers and design engineers in research and plant engineering, mechanical engineers for prototype development and high-temperature applications, process engineers, chemical process engineers, nuclear energy physicists, laser physicists and simulation engineers. The company is also looking for a Head of Integrated Management Systems and Quality, a Senior IT Systems Administrator, reinforcement in operational purchasing, and a Social Media and Content Creator. All positions are listed at www.emerald-horizon.com.
“Building entire teams requires clear processes. From day one, our new colleagues know how we work and which standards apply,” says Mag. Claus Schmidt, responsible for Organisational Development and Quality Management at Emerald Horizon AG.
A clear Roadmap: Prototype 2029, Demonstrator 2031
Emerald Horizon is following a clear timeline. The SMRX prototype is scheduled to go into operation in 2029. A demonstration plant is planned for 2031, followed by series production. Many development steps are running in parallel. Regulation is one of the challenges.
The SMRX system is a special type of small modular reactor: thorium-based, accelerator-driven and subcritical by design. One module delivers around 10 megawatts of baseload-capable electricity.
The industrial partner is the Dutch VDL Groep, with around 14,000 employees and revenue of around EUR 4 billion. VDL is responsible for engineering, manufacturing and assembly, and began construction of the ADES Test Loop in September. The first SMRX factory is to be built at a VDL site.
Its subsidiary Emerald Energy GmbH is already bringing DUALstorePLUS to market: a hybrid energy storage system for industrial companies, offered as Energy-as-a-Service with no capital investment required from the customer.
Strong International Interest
The Austrian company is attracting growing international attention. In recent months, Emerald Horizon AG’s leadership has given interviews from Washington to Zurich. Meetings with companies, investors, scientists, members of the press and authorities have taken them across Europe, from London to Budapest, and of course to the USA.
Emerald Horizon nominated for “Innovator of the Year”
Emerald Horizon AG has been nominated for brutkasten’s “Innovator of the Year” award in the Scaleups category. Brutkasten is one of Austria’s leading online and print media outlets for startups, innovation and business.
