Léman Manhattan Preparatory School Launches Human-Led AI Teacher Certification

New York, USA, October 4th, 2026, FinanceWire

New faculty initiative builds advanced AI capability while protecting independent thought and human judgment

As most schools continue to ponder how artificial intelligence will reshape teaching and learning, Léman Manhattan Preparatory School is launching a Human-Led AI Teacher Certification designed to move faculty beyond ad hoc and uneven usage toward confident creation and governance of AI-supported teaching practices.

A recent Centre for Economic Policy Research study that followed 26,811 Chinese students and their AI use over 30 months provides an important backdrop. After AI adoption, homework scores increased 18 percent, and completion time declined 30 percent. Monthly closed-book examination scores, however, fell 20 percent within six months. Longer-term declines on high-stakes entrance examinations reached 18 and 24 percent. The largest losses were concentrated among students whose behavior was consistent with outsourcing homework to AI. The bottom line is that better student output does not necessarily mean better learning.

As findings like these fuel mounting skepticism toward AI and calls to ban it in schools, Léman’s response is neither blanket prohibition nor uncritical adoption. Developed with Collegio Partners, its certification program begins with a grounded educational question. What human capability should a particular use of AI help develop?

“AI can accelerate creativity, inquiry, and problem solving, but it can also complete intellectual work that students should be performing,” said Don Lively. “It is important to ensure that AI expands human capability without displacing the thinking through which understanding, confidence, and independence develop.”

Building Faculty Capability for Effective and Responsible AI Use

The four-week certification program moves faculty through a structured progression toward four increasingly advanced capabilities.

  • Lead. Teachers use AI as a disciplined thought partner while retaining control of purpose, critique, verification, and final judgment.
  • Build. Teachers turn effective interactions into repeatable workflows aligned with their disciplines, students, and instructional goals.
  • Create. Faculty develop reusable AI-supported teaching tools that expand their instructional capabilities.
  • Delegate. Teachers learn to design and govern carefully bounded AI agents while remaining accountable for consequential decisions.

The common principle binding these sessions is Brain First. AI Second. Human Judgment Always.

Each consists of research, live demonstrations, hands-on exercises, peer review, and authentic teaching problems. Participants test AI outputs, examine failure points, revise or reject recommendations, and document the decisions that remain human. Certification is based on proof of practice rather than attendance alone.

The Human Mind Remains at the Center

The certification gives practical expression to Léman’s human-centered approach to AI. Its aim is to harness powerful tools without creating intellectual dependency. Students should be able to use AI at a high level while remaining responsible for their reasoning, evidence, authorship, revision, and final judgment.

Teachers are the designers and facilitators of learning environments in which AI deepens inquiry, feedback, differentiation, and creation without replacing original thought, evidence, revision, or defense. Teacher judgment determines where AI expands possibility and where productive intellectual effort remains essential.

This approach is organized around four commitments. AI use begins with a clear human purpose. Productive intellectual friction builds capability and remains part of the learning process. Student authorship and verification remain visible. Accuracy, bias, privacy, ethics, and appropriate limits are addressed directly.

A Path to Educational Leadership

Through the Center for Innovative Learning, faculty development, and the AI Entrepreneur Fellowship, Léman is connecting this human-centered approach to age-appropriate instruction, applied problem solving, prototyping, and entrepreneurship. Grounded in Léman’s IB culture, the strategy reinforces inquiry, reflection, agency, academic integrity, and principled action.

Education is entering a period in which new leadership models will emerge. Schools that merely add AI to inherited routines may improve the speed and appearance of student work without strengthening learning. Léman’s leadership opportunity lies in establishing a more durable standard that combines advanced AI capability with intellectual rigor, demonstrable ownership, and human development.

Human Controls. AI Supports. Léman Leads.
