South Solves the Shopify Developer Shortage: New Research Shows Why DIY Hiring Fails

Austin, Texas, USA, August 14th, 2026, FinanceWire

South Reveals 71% of In-House Shopify Builds Miss Launch Deadlines, Highlighting Need for Experienced Developers

South, a talent acquisition platform specializing in distributed development hiring, has released new research findings showing that many Shopify store owners today struggle to complete projects on time and within expectations. According to data from a survey of 480 Shopify store owners and 150 development projects completed through South’s platform, 71% of in-house Shopify builds miss their target launch date, 58% require significant rework after launch, and 64% of store owners regret not hiring an experienced developer at the beginning.

What surprised us was how many store owners tried to build alone or hire the cheapest developer available, then ended up spending three times more on fixes than they would have on hiring someone good from the start,” said Marcus Chen, VP of Operations at South. “Shopify isn’t just about plugins and themes. It’s about architecture, performance, customization, and integration.

The Reality Behind Shopify Store Development

Many entrepreneurs begin with a straightforward plan: select a Shopify theme, customize it, add products, and launch. However, projects can become significantly more complicated when businesses require custom functionality, inventory integrations, specialized checkout experiences, performance improvements, or connections with third-party systems.

As requirements expand hire shopify developers may struggle with Shopify’s Liquid templating language, APIs, application architecture, and performance considerations. What begins as a short project can become a lengthy development cycle involving repeated fixes, technical debt, and unexpected costs.

South says successful projects typically involve experienced Shopify developers from the outset. These specialists understand when to customize a theme, use an existing application, develop a custom solution, or integrate an external system.

Why Experience Matters

Deep Shopify expertise can make a difference across several areas. Experienced developers can create maintainable Liquid code, integrate inventory, accounting, shipping, and marketing platforms through APIs, identify performance bottlenecks, and make architecture decisions that support future growth.

They can help businesses make informed decisions about security, payment handling, data protection, and compliance requirements. Just as importantly, experienced developers can identify unrealistic requirements before development begins and recommend alternatives that reduce cost and complexity.

South’s research found that 67% of store owners expected complex theme customization to take two to three weeks, while actual projects averaged six to eight weeks. API integrations caused delays, with 72% of projects experiencing integration timeline changes. Additionally, 54% of stores experienced performance problems within the first month after launch.

The research found that scope changes are also common. About 89% of builds experienced changes during development, while 73% of stores required fixes or adjustments within three months of launch.

The Cost of Hiring Cheap Versus Hiring Right

South’s project tracking indicates that hiring an inexpensive developer can create higher costs. A developer charging $15–25 per hour may take four to five months to complete a project that could be delivered in approximately two months by an experienced specialist charging $45–65 per hour.

According to South, the total developer cost for the cheaper approach can reach $10,000–15,000 after accounting for extended development and rework, while experienced developers may complete comparable projects for approximately $8,000–12,000.

The difference is not simply the hourly rate. It is the quality of the result, the amount of rework required, and the store’s ability to scale without repeated technical problems.

Building for Long-Term Success

South says successful Shopify projects share several characteristics: clear requirements, early technical discovery, realistic timelines, performance planning, security considerations, and experienced developers who can challenge requirements when necessary.

Store owners who treat developers as strategic partners rather than simply low-cost contractors can identify potential problems earlier and create stronger foundations for growth.

When you hire someone who understands Shopify deeply, they can prevent decisions that create problems later,” Chen said. “They catch requirements that won’t work, optimize for what actually matters, and build a foundation that scales.
