Why Timefolk Is Building Its Skills Marketplace City by City
Dubai, UAE, October 26th, 2026, FinanceWire
A marketplace can technically operate across many countries long before it becomes useful in any particular city.
Timefolk is trying to avoid that problem.
The company has payment infrastructure that works across 120 countries, supports eight languages and has a catalogue of 80 practical skills. Yet its current launch focus is narrower: Dubai and India, developed city by city rather than treated as one large international market.
The reason comes down to how a skills marketplace works.
A Client looking for interview preparation, Business English, SI tools for work or another practical skill does not simply need the platform to exist. They need a relevant Expert to be available nearby.
That means supply has to come before demand.
Timefolk is therefore developing the Expert side first in each city. Professionals and practitioners can offer skills they already use in their working or practical lives, set their availability and establish a session fee within their city’s range. Clients can then see which Experts offer the skill they are looking for and schedule a structured session.
The approach recognises one of the harder realities of building a two sided marketplace. Having technology, payments and an app does not automatically create useful local supply.
A marketplace can have global infrastructure and still fail a Client if the skill they need is not available where they are.
Timefolk’s strategy is to build usefulness locally before trying to make scale the story.
Its current model begins with Experts. Once relevant skills are available in a city, Clients have something concrete to discover. The platform also uses a waitlist to tell people when Experts become available near them.
That sequence is important because the value of the marketplace depends on more than the number of people who can technically access it.
It depends on whether a Client can open the platform with a real need and find someone nearby who offers the relevant skill.
The skill itself comes first.
A Client selects what they want to improve, sees available Experts and chooses a public place, time and session length. The fixed session fee is shown before payment. Every Expert and every Client passes a government ID and liveness check before a session.
The result is a marketplace built around practical, in-person sessions rather than a large directory of profiles.
This local approach also allows the marketplace to reflect differences between cities.
The kinds of skills people look for can vary according to the professionals, industries, languages and communities around them. Dubai, for example, brings together people working across sectors such as aviation, hospitality, technology, recruitment, fitness and food, alongside a multilingual professional population.
India presents a different market with its own concentration of professionals and practical skills.
Instead of assuming that the same Expert mix should exist everywhere, Timefolk can develop supply according to what is available locally.
That does not mean the underlying platform changes from city to city.
The same structure remains in place. Experts work independently and in their own names. Clients begin with a skill. Sessions take place in public places. Session fees are established before payment, with secure payments processed by Stripe.
What changes is the local availability of expertise.
That distinction helps explain why Timefolk can have infrastructure designed for broad international reach while still describing its rollout in much narrower terms.
The platform is already available through the web, Timefolk on iOS and Timefolk on Android. It supports eight languages and payment capability across 120 countries.
Those numbers describe infrastructure.
They do not automatically describe marketplace depth.
Timefolk remains early, and the company has not published user numbers, revenue figures or growth claims. Its city by city approach puts a different question ahead of those metrics: is there enough relevant local expertise for the marketplace to become genuinely useful?
For a skills marketplace, that may be the more important test.
A large geographic footprint can look impressive on paper. A Client, however, is usually asking something much more specific.
Can I find the skill I need here?
Timefolk’s rollout is designed around answering that question one city at a time.
The strategy is deliberately sequential. Build the Expert base. Make relevant skills available locally. Give Clients a reason to use the marketplace. Then develop the next market with the same discipline.
For Timefolk, international reach is therefore not being treated as a single launch moment.
It is being assembled locally.
